So, Kate always likes to draw a picture on our family wipe off calendar about the next big upcoming holiday or event. Dad deploying was next on the list. (This is Chris on an airplane flying away. 😥)
So . . . good ol' COVID. Always throwing a wrench into everything. Due to the pandemic there were no commercial flights flying between the US and Honduras at the moment (along with many other countries), so the only option to get there was through military aircraft. The closest flight was leaving from an airforce base in Charleston, South Carolina, about an 8 hour drive away. So what does that mean? ROAD TRIP!!
It was a beautiful drive and lots of good talking time. If only it wasn't a one way trip for Chris it would have been a lot more fun. It was an early morning seeing him off, but he made it! Funny thing was, his flight to Honduras was only like 3-4 hours. He had already arrived and I still had multiple hours left to drive!
Upon arrival, Chris had to quarantine for 2 weeks. Yikes! Not a fun way to start a deployment. Luckily he has a one bedroom apartment, so enough room to move around and work out a little bit, and they set up a desk with a computer and phone so he's been doing some work and virtual meetings a bit too. Not the funnest, but at least it helps break up the monotony.
On the 4th of July, Chris was able to see the base fireworks show from his porch, which was cool. He also wore his Captain America shirt for me (woot, woot!) So proud of my own personal soldier/hero. Being a soldier is not always fun, glamorous, or rewarded, and there is A LOT of personal sacrifice. But I am so proud of my husband, who he is, what he stands for, and that he's always striving to do what's right for our family and those he serves with. Love my guy!
