Thanksgiving: The Good, the Bad, and the Turkey (Nov 2018)

Since Chris was deployed, there was nothing holding us back from going up to Carolyn's early and visiting some friends soooo . . . we did!  First, we met up for dinner with Aly's friend Whitney and her mom whom she met in Paraguay at HEFY.  They just happen to live in the Stake next to our cousins, so that's helpful!

Next, we headed up to Kentucky for a day trip.  When we were up in Tennessee for Hurricane Michael the kids were begging me to take them up to Kentucky to see their friends, but we were on a day by day basis on when the kids would go back to school and I was just a little too stressed for something like that.  So I told them that if it worked out we could come up for a day during Thanksgiving break.  My good friend, Heather, who had moved up to Indiana also came down and we gathered as many people as were available to come at the church.  It was like we had never left.  The kids all just jumped in and started playing and goofing off and the moms just started gabbing.

Kentucky was such a good time for my family.  I have never met such down to earth, genuine, friendly, accepting people in my life.  They welcomed my kids and our family wholeheartedly.  I will always remember Kentucky as a time of healing for our family where we were given the space to take a break from deployments and crazy military life and just be a family.  Such a good season in our lives.

Of course we had to stop by our old house on the way home as well.  Ah, memories.

Back with the Paine's there was a lot of fun people to see and fun activities going on.   Grammy was here this year and really liked the calendar of family pictures we gave her for the year.

The girls made a wooden nativity and the traditional gingerbread houses.

Kate made a little girl sledding this year. . . and not sure what's going on with her face...

Lise and Aly chose not to be pictured with their gingerbread houses this year.

The weather was perfect.  There were a lot of outdoor games . . . and indoor games going on.  Just lots of fun and good times all around.

Unfortunately, it wasn't all fun and games.  Aly and Lise got into a wrestling match with Aly's computer and it ended up hitting Aly in the face and chipped a large piece of her front tooth out the night before Thanksgiving.  That was a fun experience, let me tell ya.

Nobody was open on Thanksgiving, of course, so Aly just had to suffer through it and kind of mush her Thanksgiving feast on the roof of her mouth.  We were able to find a dentist who was willing to come in on Friday and fix her up though, which was good because Aly started having in a lot of pain and developed major sensitivity to heat and cold (and air). And she came out looking as good as new, thank goodness.  (And for $650 out of pocket it better look as good as new!)  Chalk it up to one of those life experiences that you've just got to deal with.  Hopefully Aly and Lise learned their lesson . . . but there have been plenty of arguments since, so I'm not sure.  But less throwing and grabbing things, so that's good.

But, tooth or no tooth, the Thanksgiving festivities must go on!  Thanks to the chefs who always make our Thanksgiving so scrumptious.  There was tons of delicious food, as always, and a nice full table of people we love to eat and share it with.

Following the feast, there was the traditional ping pong tournament.  We had to work off some of those calories before we eat some pie!

Thanksgiving also happened to fall on Aly's birthday this year, so she got the first piece of pumpkin pie with a candle in it.

The following day there was the traditional bowling and white elephant gift exchange.  Lots of good stuff there.

So, another amazing Thanksgiving.  Until next year . . .

. . . Oh, and let's take a minute to talk about how Chris spent his Thanksgiving . . . why, he was working, of course.  Because that's what a deployment is -  working all day, every day, no weekends, no holidays.  Poor guy, he really deserves a break.

He did volunteer to serve the Thanksgiving meal at the chow hall to the soldiers, just to shake things up.  What a great guy.  Love that man!

And one final tidbit that I want to throw in here.  I didn't get to watch the UofU/BYU football game this year.  But I did see the highlights and man, it was awesome!  Go Utes!!

Ed Sheeran and other Shenanigans (Nov 2018)

So, how do I begin this?  Aly is obsessed with Ed Sheeran.  As in, we are listening to him constantly in our house.  I'm not complaining; he's a good artist.  But Aly's obsessed.  So anyway, a few months ago she started telling me about Ed Sheeran being on tour and could we please go to his concert in New Orleans . . . and then Orlando . . . The thing is she would always ask me about a week out and I'm currently a single parent with 3 other kids to worry about, not to mention I'm a planner and need a little more notice on things like this.  But her birthday was coming up, so my friend and I got online to look at the concert tour schedule and dum, da, dum, there was a weekend in November when Ed Sheeran was playing in Atlanta and we were free.  Happy Birthday, Aly!!  Another bonus was that my friend's Sister lives just south of Atlanta and would let us stay at her house.  Bonus!
ATLANTA, HERE WE COME!

The girls making fun of me for taking the worst selfie ever

So Aly, Lise, Paige, Carrie and I hopped in the car and had a great time chatting on the road trip up there and after a quick stop to drop off our gear we headed to the concert.  We found a hip pizza place to eat before heading in.  Yummy! The one thing I wish I would have known ahead of time is that you couldn't bring in any bags that were larger than a fanny pack so we ended up having to check our purses in a dodgy station off to the side.

Bonus at the concert is that Aly & Paige loved one of the opening acts, Lauv.  Cold Play was also on the docket.

And then . . . there was ED SHEERAN!

Now, I'm not a big concert gal, but Aly loved it.  I think Lise and Paige had fun too.  And Ed gave a pretty good concert.  Props to him.

In other news, Aly also got her shoes with a map of the US on them so she can mark off all the places she's lived/visited, and I finished her baby book to give to her as well.  (I was trying to finish the book for her 16th birthday, but hey, it's just as good a year later, right?)

And in other random things that happened in November, Kylie became an explorer with her "Pocket Explorer field guide", camera, backpack, and boots!

Kate . . . was being Kate. . .
Here's a quote of the week from Kate:
Kate - I'll just be a mom and start eating leftovers for breakfast so we can start having real meals for dinner.

Nice.  I appreciate her trying to help out the leftover situation - and for realizing the responsibilities of a mother. hahaha!

Not sure what was happening in this picture either, but I'm always happy when my girls are willing to take a selfie with me.

And Kylie is having a great time being a 3rd grader.  I love the random stuff I find around the house that just makes our lives interesting.  I want to sing with the turtles!!

Quote from Kylie while doing her Math word problems:

Kylie - I wish these people could just solve their own problems!

Amen, Sister.

Some Spooktakular Guests visit for Halloween (Oct 2018)

Kate made these awesome Autumn Rocks at Activity Days

We got to have some fun guests out for all the Halloween Festivities.   My Dad and Terri came out for a week and we had some fun adventures.  First off we were able to go to a football game to watch Analise perform with the color guard, which was pretty cool.

The weather was pretty nice so we headed to the Harborwalk to do a little shopping and go to lunch while the kids were in school.  We also did a little early Christmas shopping (gasp!) for a pencil Christmas tree for me.

This is Kylie's Monster candy jar.

Aly's MIA in these pictures, but we did go out to breakfast with her at Panera one day.  That girl's just hard to track down sometimes. The rest of us carved a few pumpkins and Terri showed us how to do a magic trick with skittles.    It's always fun to have visitors to share in all the fun.  Thanks for coming Grandpa and Terri!

The girls got a couple of chances to dress up, once for the ward trunk or treat and once on Halloween.  This year Kylie was a gypsy, Kate was a stick figure (love those glow in the dark sticks), Lise was Darla from Finding Nemo, and Aly (not shown) went with White Trash again.

Another successful Halloween on the books . . . and way too much candy in my house!
