Deployment #6

So, after 5 years deployment free (although, of course, not Chris-being-gone-free), the deployment we knew was coming since we moved here had finally arrived.  How could we let this awesome hunk go?  Well, it was rought, but first we did a few last Hurrah's before he left - one final beach day, one final date at a cozy little restaurant, and one final Nerf War while the kids school was cancelled for Hurricane Isaac.  (Um, yeah, we turned our house into a tank for that thing, but it never really ended up coming our way.  Better safe than sorry though, right? :)>)  Oh, and Chris and I watched a whole lot of Psych and ate a whole lot of ice cream and brownies for stress release.  (. . . and Rice Krispie Treats and Pumpkin Pie and cookies and . . . Chris was totally guilt tripping the girls [Aly] to make him a ton of goodies because he wasn't going to get them for almost a year.  It worked.)
Before we sent Chris on his way, we also added a new member to the family: Flat Dad.  At the  pre-deployment briefing for the kids they had us trace Chris on a huge roll of paper so we could "take him around with us" while he's gone.  I wasn't all about carrying around a 6' piece of paper, but I did print out a picture of his face that fit nicely on the head and figured it would make for a good conversation piece for any and all who come to visit our home and a security system if anyone was trying to break in.  (Ha, ha.)
Actually we have gotten quite a bit of use out of Flat Dad. The girls will talk to him and he's good for giving hugs. We've decided to turn him into a collage of things that happen during this school year.

Before Chris left we also gave the girls their Build-a-Bears and Chris gave each of us a priesthood blessing.  What a service to our family.  I am so grateful that Chris honors his priesthood so that he can bless us to feel strengthened and comforted while he is away.

And now to answer to two questions I get asked all the time now.  How is Chris doing?  Well, he's stressed, busy, and tired.  (He's in a war zone, ya know?)  It's plenty busy over there and Chris has got crazy insane hours, getting only 3-4 hours of sleep a night, and it appears that is to be the norm.  I think he's amazing just to be functioning.  He's putting one foot in front of the other and doing everything he can to keep his guys safe, despite being bone tired all the time.  And for that he is my hero.  Perks for this deployment are that he has his own room, he's able to Skype with me sometimes and the family every Sunday, and we also get to communicate through e-mail.

The second question: How are you doing?  Well, while Chris is overseas defending our freedoms and fighting the war on terror, I've got my own battles to fight, namely Stress vs. Serene, Service vs. Self-Pity, and Gratitude vs. Complaining.

I have been told that I handle large amounts of stress very well.  Be that as it may, there is something to be said for having some down time.  I had been feeling that since we've moved here I have stayed in an almost constant amped up state of stress, which was  negatively affecting my mothering.  So, as this deployment got closer and I was thinking about being a single parent full time, I decided to try to destress my life as much as possible so that I could be a calm, kind, fun mom to my girls.   Now, it's kind of hard to destress a whole bunch with 4 kids, especially with soccer, activity days, homework, etc.  But 3 of them were going to be in school all day, so I decided not to volunteer at the school this year and just have the days with Kylie to go to the gym, library story time, and playgroup,  so that when everybody got home and the craziness started, I was ready to focus on them and meet their needs and not already be frazzled from a full day.  So far it has worked out pretty well.

You know, it's pretty easy to indulge in Self-Pity, especially when everyone is feeling sorry for you and expressing how hard your life must be.  When I start feeling myself headed that way, I pray and ask that I may find someone - anyone - to lift, reach out to, or fulfill a need in some small way.  It's amazing the healing that comes by helping someone else.  Just through a card, or a hug, or a meal, or talking to someone who's sitting alone, or watching young children.  It is so uplifting to feel that I am able to give, rather than feeling empty and in need.

And finally, Gratitude vs. Complaining.  Negativity seems to be one of my greatest enemies and one of the hardest to overcome once I start down that road.  First of all, I decided to re-read "The Hiding Place", by Corrie Ten Boom.  I figured if anything could help me focus on seeing the Lord's Hand in my life despite, and maybe because of, the hard things in my life, then that was it.  It was time well spent.  Secondly, in my e-mails to Chris, I decided to start a Gratitude Journal of sorts, as a means of letting him know what we are doing.  That idea came to me through pure inspiration, let me tell you.  I never realized the power to be found in gratitude.  It is so much more than having a good attitude.  For instance, rather than saying to Chris, "Aly watched the girls while I went to the Relief Society Broadcast", it is so much more powerful to say, "I am grateful to have a daughter who is responsible,  willing to babysit her sisters, take care of dinner, and get everyone to bed, so that I can attend the Relief Society Broadcast."  If you want to see the small miracles that happen in your life every day and gain a true sense of how much your Heavenly Father truly loves you and abundantly blesses you, I would highly recommend starting a gratitude journal.  As I've expressed gratitude and appreciation for so, so many things in my life, I have been lifted and filled with joy.  It has helped me to have a deeper love for my children and Chris, as well as extended family and others I come in contact with every day.  It is so much easier to see things from an eternal perspective and just be - happy.

Here are a few of the things I have found to be grateful for during this deployment:

* For girls who like having their mom around and will joke, laugh, and dance with me.
*For a Father who has inspired his girls to read the scriptures every day.  It has been wonderful to see them reading in their beds without being reminded.  (Chris challenged Aly and Analise to read their scriptures every day while he’s gone and he would do the same.  Then, if everybody did it, he’d take them to Big Kahuna’s water park when he got back.)
*For an awesome husband who makes me feel loved.
*For Family Prayer ½ way around the world
*For the knowledge that gratitude is a way to live and has little to do with how much you have.

So, if you wanted to know how we're doing, that's how we're doing.  (Maybe a little more than you wanted to know.)  Overall, I'd say we're doing pretty well.  We're fighting out daily battles and will continue to do so. We've done this before and we'll do it again. And we know we'll get through with the help of our Savior, who will make all things for our good, if we trust in Him. "We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; . . . For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things whichare not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal." (2 Corinthians 4:8-9, 17-18)

Back to School & Other Craziness

After an amazing fun-filled summer, we slid into home just in time for the Meet the Teacher Day back at the school.  It is really crazy having to keep track of 3 kids and making sure they're well adjusted in school, but it has panned out pretty well as follows:
Kate was in Mrs. Marrion's clas as a Manta Ray.  Because she did so well at her Kindergarten evaluation she was slotted to go into a K-1 combo doing 1st Grade work with her classmates.  I was a little nervous, but felt this would be a good fit for Kate and she loved Mrs. Marrion, so I felt all would be well . . .
Analise was placed in the Gifted class this year with Mrs. Mims as a Mariner.  She knows a lot of the kids in her class, along with her best friend at school, Kara.  She has really come far this year in school already - she has become a self motivator on getting her homework done and working independently, she just finished the Ramona Quimby series and has discovered the love of reading, and she loves all the extra projects they get to do in her class (paper mache globes, salt dough landforms [see below], learning to make a power point presentation on the computer, and a read-a-thon with popcorn!)

Aly was put in Ms. Avery's class as an Aviator.  She has a friend from our ward in her class and loves her teacher as well.  She is attending the advanced reading class again this year and continues to cruise through books at lightning speed (it's hard for me to keep some good book ideas handy!)  She is part of the 5th Grade Chorus group and is also in the top 3 for her grade at Mile Club.  What a multi-talented, well-rounded girl.  I can't believe this is her last year in elementary school.
Above is a picture taken on the first day of school.

And then, after two weeks of school, Kate had to have a second 1st Day of School.  Apparently there were too many first graders so there wasn't enough room to have a K-1 combo class. So Kate got moved to Mrs. Schladenhauffen's Kindergarten class as a Shining Star.
We love Mrs. Schladenhauffen just as much as Mrs. Marrion and Kate has made a ton of great friends in her new class, but the transition to school and being shuffled all around has been hard on Kate (and therefore on me).  First of all, going to full day Kindergarten has been exhausting to Kate (she fell asleep on the bus on the way home the 2nd day of school and often struggles to wake up in the morning).  Add to that the stress on the family for an impending deployment and - WHAMO! - recipe for disaster.  There have been many tears and tantrums on both sides, but I think we are slowly leveling out.  There are tons of things Kate loves about school: field trips (she has two this month!), Fire Safety Day, prizes from the treasure box for doing her homework, Blow pops for doing her reading, and tons of coloring, coloring, coloring!  The Math and Reading seem to be a little monotonous, but I'm having her read with me at home and she is doing great!  Also, there are other things she is learning, like how to form her letters correctly, that are right on par.  I think she is going to have a great year!
And here are a couple of pictures from the girl's back to school night:
Here is Kate's sand station - now see what a fun classroom this is?  A teacher who allows a big bucket of sand in her classroom.  I don't know if I could stand it.
 Microscopic treasures in Analise's classroom.
And the picture I drew following instructions Aly had left for me.  On the left is my picture.  On the right is what it was supposed to look like.  Aly did a good job writing those instructions I'd say!

So here's to another fun and exciting school year!

Utah Vacation Part 3 - Lake Powell with the Jackman's

We spent our last week in Utah at one of my favorite places of all time - Lake Powell.  Growing up I would go to Lake Powell usually once or twice a summer - so many wonderful childhood memories there.  I love that I now get to create more memories with my own children.  It was an awesome trip and here are some of the highlights:

* That my brother, Matt, would drive into Page at midnight to get Kylie My Little Pony Cupcakes for her Birthday.  That was the only party she got for turning two . . . oh, and a whole week at the lake . . . and she was completely happy!
*The Beauty of nature that is there.  Day or night it is just gorgeous.  One of the things I loved was looking at the millions of stars/shooting stars/constellations every night with Chris.  It took my breath away.

* Boatrides.  I absolutely love just riding in the boat, exploring the canyons, or packing a lunch and finding a shady spot to eat and swim.

* Watching how excited the girls get to "drive the boat".

*Fun behind the boat.  The Kids all loved the tube rides, and this year Aly and Analise both learned how to wake board.  (Look at the grin on Aly's face!)  The girls are really going to give me a run for my money, but I still did some skiing and a few 360s on the knee board, so all is well.

(*Jetski rides with my girls.)
* Playing in the sand.  Kylie and Makai really liked getting down and dirty while the adults would play horse shoes in the shade of the evening.

* Catching fish off the back of the houseboat
* Hiking, climbing, and exploring.  I love how the water level is different every year, so every year there's new things to explore - the trails are different, there's new water basins, etc.  Notice how Kylie is always next to me in the pictures.  For some reason she became glued to my backside on this trip and wouldn't let anyone else help her.  So if I wanted to hike a mountain, she was going to hike it with me.  I was actually quite proud of myself in the end that we never fell off a cliff.

* Our own personal, double basin swimming pool we discovered this year. We had so much fun heading over to this little spot to swim, hike around, and jump in.  In the picture below it is Chris, Aly, and I jumping in together.  Notice my sister-in-law Tiffany holding Kylie by her life jacket as she was crying and trying to jump in after me.
* Shampoo mohawks while taking a bath at the back of the boat.

* A bonfire and s'mores - while watching the shooting stars above.
* A midnight swim (or maybe it was 10:30?)

*Sliding/jumping off the houseboat.  This is one of the kids favorite pastimes.  They kept count and some of them went down the slide over a hundred times!
* All the fun crafts and activities Aunt Tiffany brought for the kids.  She had a project a day ranging from water sponge balls to macaroni art to sock puppets.  Love how Kate and Kylie actually wanted to wear them as socks.

*Kayaking with my hubby.  This was the first year I really tried this out and I loved it!!  Maybe it's just because Chris made it so easy to do.
* Heading to the marina for lunch . . . and feeding the Carp the extra fries.

* Just enjoying being together - movies, Sudoku puzzles with Chris, playing games . . .

Thanks for a great trip everyone.  We loved it all and we will be back for more - hopefully soon.

Utah Vacation Part 2 - Mountain Getaway with the O'Gwin's

While in Utah, we also spent some awesome time with Chris' family.

We had a big family dinner at Chris' brother's house, where the kids were blown away by the bees and chickens they were raising.  It was fun to see all of our now married nephews and niece and meet their spouses too.  Always fun to get together.

Next we headed up to Grammy and Papa's house up the canyon.  It is always so beautiful up in the mountains with all the trees.  I was really homesick for the mountains, so this was therapeutic for me as well.  Cousins came along, which made everything a million times more fun.  There was much playing in the sandbox,  WATCHING THE OLYMPICS - OH YEAH!, and riding on the four wheeler. Of course there was also much amazing food to be consumed through stuffing our faces, thanks to Marilyn's scrumptious cooking.

In addition, there was tons of "wildlife" to be attended to.  Whether it was feeding the horses, or feeding the chipmunks . . . or building them a whole log city! (complete with swimming pool.  The kids couldn't figure out why the chipmunks were drinking the pool water instead of swimming in it.)
We also went out on a few day trips, which were super awesome.  First we went to Heritage Park where we rode trains, made pioneer crafts, rode horses, watched a Native American Dance performance, panned for gold, visited the petting zoo, and finished off with ice cream.  A very exciting day.

We also went to Provo Canyon Falls.  It was beautiful.  I love how we could just hike around and explore along the river.  I could have sat there soaking in the views for hours.  (And I know it looks like Kylie could just fall into the waterfall at any minute, but it really was pretty safe - sort of. ;)>)

Thanks O'Gwin Clan, for letting us come relax, enjoy the scenery, and enjoy great company.  It was a much needed respite.
