When Things Get Wacky (and a Little Hairy) - March 2016

Um, not sure what's going on here.  But that's about par for the course.  Are the girls showing that they'e number one or pretending to be unicorns?  Who knows.

Our March started out with a bang because of Dr. Seuss's birthday.  (They celebrate so many more things in elementary school now than when I was a kid.)  Kate had been asking me for Green Eggs and Ham, so I attempted it, even though our eggs were scrambled.  And what is with the creepy crafts the teachers have  the kids make these days?  Love this cutout of Kylie as "Thing 1".
Kylie actually had an entire "Seuss Week".  Here she is with her crazy hair on Wacky Wednesday!

Kate's sense of style never fails.  She got some new shoes and shirt and came up with this detective outfit.  What a cutie.  When did she start looking so old?   And then, in the next instant, she'll come to me, ready for church and say, "Hey, I look like D.W.'s imaginary friend, Nadine, from Arthur!"  Growing up one minute and back to a little kid the next.  Love watching her grow up.

Analise has been having her own hair adventures as well.  Whether trying to create an underwater floating look or giving herself a mustache and beard with her own hair, you never know what she's going to come up with.

In March we also had a few parties  - one with the girls from dance, and one as a fundraiser dinner/dessert auction to raise money for girl's camp.  (I ended up with this yummy fruit pizza and chocolate cake balls - delish!)  On a side note, Kylie was sad (read as "wailing uncontrollably") that the older girls got to have a party with their dance friends, so I ended up having a movie party at our house with 6 five year olds.  So fun, and so crazy!

In March we also got to go to a roller skating  party with the ward and it was a BLAST!  We hadn't been rollerskating in forever and I forgot how fun it was.  Lise and Kate were old enough to balance on their own and Aly was off with friends from the second we got there.
Kylie was the only one who had never been skating, but they had these awesome skates for little kids that fit over their shoes and didn't roll too fast.  It was perfect.
Kylie's outfit was another symptom of "Seuss Week" where you were supposed to dress up crazy!

Hooray for another pool party!
In March, while Chris was off learning how to become a Battalion Commander, I realized that we would no longer be able to avoid all the military balls.  So I started the extended process of finding a modest evening gown for just such an occasion.  Let me tell you - finding formal wear with a back, front, sleeves, and middle is much harder than you would think! (Unless you want to look like you're 50+ years old) I finally came up with a couple of options that I think will work, but even so I had to buy a shrug and wear a shirt underneath the see-through lace.  Sheesh!
Next up - Shoes!  I have not worn heels in years (mainly because I hate them!) but I figured it was time to bite the bullet.  I had a couple friends take me to a Zappo's outlet where you could get shoes that were returned online for 1/2 price.  A very good find!
Also, so thankful to awesome friends to make the trip fun!
Between Dr. Seuss Week and an early Easter, St. Patty's Day was kind of a blip on the screen this year.  But I couldn't let it pass by without giving a nod to the Irish Holiday . . . seeing as we're Irish and all. ;)
In March Kate finished passing off all of the 13th Articles of Faith and earned herself the much desired "Humongous Cookie."  (She did share with us a little bit.)

March also brought the hope of Spring.  We started to have some warmer days and the trees were starting to show signs of life, but winter still had some tricks up its sleeves.  It was beautiful though, nonetheless.

After discovering her love of running during cross country, Aly decided to run track in the Spring.  She ran all sorts of events, including the 1-miler, the 2-miler, some shorter races and some relays. (I was just trying to figure it all out!)

While Aly was out running around, I was still working out with my friend in her garage, wanting the weather to warm up, and stretching to keep our splits alive and well!
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, while Chris and I would go to watch Aly at her track meets, the other girls would find creative ways to stay busy.  One weekend they decided to make "stress balls" by putting flour into balloons and drawing emoji faces on them.  Then they decided to sell them in the driveway.  They were so proud when they sold 6 - 3 to the neighbors and 3 to themselves! (Yes, they went and got their own money and put it into the pot and then redistributed their earnings at the end of the day.)

With Easter so early this year it kind of caught me off guard.  But with a couple Easter Egg Hunts and the Easter Bunny showing up we did just fine.

Kate really wanted the Easter Bunny to draw a self portrait.  I told her it would pretty hard since the Easter Bunny had only paws, not hands.  Actually, it looks like someone stuck a marker between their teeth and tried to draw a bunny picture. ;)  Not too bad a job though, if I do say so myself.

In January we started reading the Book of Mormon again as a family. (Our  goal is to finish by the time we leave Florida - 2 1/2 years - I hope we can make it! ;)>)  When we finished Lehi's dream the girls wanted to recreate it out of Lego's like we did last time.  Ah, the memories.

The Large and Spacious Building got a little bigger this time around - Thanks Aly!

Actually, everything got a little bigger this time around.  There were gateways into the mists of darkness, a fountain in our river of filthiness, and all different kinds of fronds and leaves on our tree of life.

The end of March was the beginning of all the plays, assemblies, and field trips.  Kate was in a Patriotic Play entitled "You're a Grand Old Flag."  She got to play "the ditsy student" - and she did a great job! ;)

I also had a chance to go with Kate to the Science Museum with her Gifted and Talented Group.  It was lotsa fun following that girl around and watching her explore.

Kate was the master full-body-bubble maker.  Not many of the kids could get it to work, but she got it over her head multiple times.
Full size light bright!

I was also able to go with Kylie on her field trip to the zoo.  Before they went, each Kindergartener did their first ever school report/presentation on a zoo animal.  Kylie chose -  not just monkeys - but baby monkeys.  She did such a good job writing her report, picking out pictures, and practicing presenting.  I was so proud of her!

One of my favorite parts of being a mom is going on school field trips with my kiddos!

Quotes of the Week

It's been awhile since I've done this, and they've been piling up, so here are some of the best ones.
This is Aly wearing a program on her head so she won't get sunburned.
Our family pulls into the church parking lot on Sunday.
Aly - Oh! I forgot to take off my PJ pants!
(She had just put on her dress and left on her PJ's underneath!)

Lise wanted me to take a picture of her with her yoga ball on her back so she could "be a snail"

I came in from the garage one day singing the song that was on the radio.
Lise - Mom, what happens in the car, stays in the car.
(Apparently she didn't like my singing voice - or didn't want to get that song stuck in her head! ;)>)
Kylie acting as a "Hang in There" cat poster on a car trip

Kylie, my little drama queen, is always swinging from one extreme to the other.  One day, when she was having a "rough day" she was complaining that we weren't "doing anything fun" after school.
Me - Play with your toys.
Kylie - I don't care about them. They mean nothing to me.
A few minutes later this had escalated even further to -
Kylie - I just want to leave this family and join another family.
Me - Ok. Then they can listen to you complain about how terrible your life is.
Kylie - I have an even better idea! I should just go to Madagascar and get eaten by a lion!
(Oh, how she loves the drama!)

On the other hand, Kylie also loves being a ham and will just continue to do the same thing over and over for laughs.
Me - Kylie, here's the rule for little kids being funny.  It's not funny when you're trying to be funny.
Kylie (5 minutes later) - Hey Mom, Look!  I'm not trying to be funny!
Kate eating a lemon at a Mexican restaurant.  That face didn't keep her from finishing it.

Kate, of course, has many.  She has informed us that we cannot call our ice "ice cubes", because they are not in the 3 dimensional shape of a cube.  We must call them "ice crescents" instead. Kate has also informed me that she wants to be a chicken next Halloween so that when she's trick-or-treating she can "cross the road to get to the other side."

This was a lovely conversation I overheard between Lise and Kate:
Lise - Kate, you never multi-task.
Kate - Yes I do.  One time I brushed my teeth while I was on the toilet going to the bathroom.

And finally for Kate, we were having family scriptures and reading about Nephi's family in the wilderness and standing up for what's right, even when it's hard.
Me - Heavenly Father can help and strengthen us.  Have any of you ever had a time when it's been hard for you because you're one of the only LDS kids in your school?
Aly, Lise, Kylie - No. Not really. Nuh-uh.
Kate - Ain't nobody got time for that!

Hahaha!  You go girls.  Super proud of my kiddos for being willing to stand up for what's right.  "For I am not ahamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth;" (Romans 1:16)

Until next time!
